|
According to increased implementation of PACS in hospitals, outside DICOM CD is regarded as a major means of interchanging medical records for imaging studies in patient transfer between hospitals. Although outside CDs are supposed to conform the DICOM standards, there exists non-standard cases in reality. In addition, the CDs may cause software conflict with programs running on clinician’s desktop during image viewing, which leads to difficulties in patient care. Therefore, there have been demands for an improved method of incorporating outside CD into patient care process. This study presents the experience for the centralized outside CD registration system that has been carried out in Seoul National University Hospital and its effect on workflow improvement. The tuning of information technology resources such as development of software program for convenient registration of outside CD and modification of EMR program, as well as rearranging human and space resources to the centralized CD registration system eliminated the difficulties significantly and increased the throughput of outside CD registration. The authors believe this centralized system for outside CD registration can be an effective and safe model for interchanging imaging information among hospitals in a transient information environment where threats exist such as non-standard data, software program conflict, and possible infection of computer virus.
